In 1998, at the height of their fame, the Backstreet Boys seemed to be caught in their own turmoil and troubles. While A.J. McLean had always been the party boy, his use of drugs was becoming worse. Brian Littrell underwent surgery in early 1998 to correct a congenital heart defect, and the Boys became embroiled in lawsuits against Pearlman and the rest of their management over royalties for most of the rest of the year.
