Born Huddie William Ledbetter, the blues and folk musician would earn the nickname LeadBelly later in life, when serving a term in prison. Sounding like his last name, but signifying his physical might (LeadBelly killed one of his relatives in a fight), he would keep the name when leaving prison and use it as a pseudonym in his recordings.
